Trempealeau Wildlife Refuge
A great blue heron stands on a dry spot in an algae covered pond.

The Trempealeau Wildlife Refuge is just a short drive up the river road from La Crosse and well worth the trip. It features a 4.5 mile drivable loop around the refuge with places to stop for photos along the way and markers to show interesting areas. The road is one way and not wide enough to pass someone in most places so you'll need to be prepared to hop back in the car quickly if you stop outside of the designated areas. There are also multiple hiking paths and the road itself is walkable if you want a longer hike. The loop is mapped out in this brochure.

The refuge is home to many different types of flora and fauna and includes both wetlands and prairie along with wooded areas. Part way through the loop, across from the visitor center, is an overlook of the wetlands that run alongside the Mississippi River.

Dogs are allowed if leashed. Much of it, including the overlook, is wheelchair accessible.
