Holland Sand Prairie

Overlooking the Holland Sand Prairie. Mostly plants with a hint of sky at the top.

The Holland Sand Prairie is a remnant of the ancient prairie that used to cover this area. Kept as an unplowed farm since the original homesteading days, it was rescued from sale and likely destruction in 2004 and is now owned by the Town of Holland. Management and maintenance of the prairie are shared between the Town, MVC, the Prairie Enthusiasts, and the Friends of Holland Sand Prairie.

The land is wild without paved or gravel trails but there is a mowed area around the perimeter for walking and a narrow and overgrown trail that runs through the center. You can see the trails mapped on this PDF brochure. There is no requirement to stay on the trails but only pedestrian, non-destructive activities are allowed. So feel free to wander for photos but long pants and waterproof boots are highly recommended to protect against the ticks and chiggers.

Best lenses are a long lens for birds and a macro to use on the abundance of flowers and insects.

Notes:

  • The lot is very small, only big enough for 3 or 4 cars.
  • Not good for wheelchairs or carts due to the narrow entrance and trail.
  • No restrooms but Holland Park is a short distance up the road.
  • No pets or hunting allowed.

Directions:

The lot is small and easy to miss. If you are coming from Holmen, it will be on the left just past the sign for Beaver Builders Supply. If coming from Holland, it will be on the right just past the Town Hall.
