July 9, 2021 Milky Way Shoot

From Brian:

It's that Milky Way time of month.  This week is a great time to shoot the Milky Way if the weather cooperates.  The moon rises well after midnight.  Many people asked that I schedule the shoot on the weekend so they don't have to go to work the next day.  The new moon is this Friday, July 9th.  A great night to shoot.

I have been scouting several new locations but with the humidity so high none have worked out due to nearby lights that cause excessive air glow.  Some of these spots will be better in the fall. As a result we will be returning to an old favorite that has about as dark of skies as can be found in the area.  It is the old cemetery on Brickman Ridge Road.  See the map below.  There are no nearby lights, very interesting tombstones for light painting and room for plenty of photographers.  Many great images have been captured here in the past.  The galactic core rises a little after 11:00 PM which will allow us to get some great shots before midnight.

The weather forecast is iffy, but that can change a lot between now and Friday.  If you want to attend or just get latest info on the shoot please send me an email at [email removed - contact Brian] .  Everyone who signs up will get emails on latest conditions and a power point presentation on how to prepare for the shoot.  On the night of the shoot I will send out email(s), to the interested list, about the status of the shoot based on weather conditions.

If the weather is potentially good I will be on location at 10 PM and send the final email about shooting conditions.  So you can wait to leave home until you receive that if you like.  If you are planning on shooting be on site at 11PM at the latest to set up.  Myself and other mentors will be available to help those who are new to astrophotography..

Bring your camera with a memory card in it.  Tripod, wide angle lens that can be set to somewhere between10-24mm, a red headlamp, and bug spray.

Looking forward to another great shoot.
