Competition Rules and Info

October through May we have a monthly competition. Members may submit their photos to a panel of three judges, who are also members, and have their work critiqued and ranked. The judging takes place on Sunday before the meeting and the results are shown at the meeting.

While structured as a competition with places given, the focus is on having others critique your work and give you ideas on how you may improve it. By submitting your photos you will get feedback from an impartial audience which can tell you more about how you are doing than the typical response from friends and family.

Classes

Because not everyone is at the same skill level, the photo competitions are divided into two classes: A (for Advanced) and B (for Beginner). New members can choose which class they feel they belong in. There are no special requirements to be in class A, but you will be judged against experienced photographers.

Any person in class B that has earned 50 monthly competition points and gets first place in any category during the Year End competition will automatically be placed in class A the following year. Occasionally, someone will win with a "lucky photo" and not be ready to move to class A. If that happens, you can request to remain in class B.

Competition Rules

  • Entrants must be paid members of La Crosse Area Camera Club.
  • You may enter a total of 4 images as follows:
    • No more than two images in one category. Categories include projected images: Open, Nature, People, Creative; and Prints. Three of the four projected categories are available each month.
    • No more than 3 total projected images.
    • Example 1: 2 open, 2 prints
    • Example 2: 1 nature, 1 people, 1 open, 1 print
    • Example 3: 2 people, 1 nature, 1 print
    • Example 4: 1 open, 1 people, 2 prints
  • Entries must be prepared as explained in Submitting Entries.
  • The deadline for each competition will be listed on the schedule. (Normally Sunday at 5pm of the week prior to the results meeting.)
  • Images will be judged based on 3 criteria: technique, composition & impact (interest). See Judging Criteria for more information.
  • While we don't place a limit on manipulation (except the Nature category), all entries must start as a photo. The photo and any manipulation must be the work of the entrant. In the case of composite images, all component images must be the original work of the person submitting the images.
  • Any competition entries receiving an acceptance or higher place are eligible to be entered in the Year End Competition.
  • If an image does not receive an award in monthly competition, it may be re-entered in a later month. Images that receive awards may not be re-entered in subsequent competitions unless significant alterations have been made to the image.

Year End

In June of each year we have the Year End competition. Any photo that placed with acceptance or higher during the year is automatically entered into this competition, including images that were voted in for acceptance by the membership. Three judges from outside the club will re-judge all the photos for this final competition. The results are shown at the Year End Banquet, usually the first Sunday in June. Plaques are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places and certificates for honorable mention.

N4C Competitions

Each month of the club calendar all N4C affiliated clubs are eligible to enter 8 images each in different categories. Entries are limited to one per individual per category. LACC participates in Pictorial (Open), Nature, Photojournalism, and Contemporary. Our N4C Digital Competition Chair selects from the winning images from the previous month and from other images submitted for consideration by our members. For N4C competition, there is no distinction between "A" and "B" members.
